Welcome back to Part 4! – the top Japanese phrases, that you, as a Japanese learner should know. These are related to learning and are great for beginners.

31. I’ve been learning Japanese for 10 years.

  • 十年間、日本語を勉強してきました。
  • Jū-nenkan, Nihongo o benkyō shite kimashita.

How long have you been studying Japanese? 10 years? Really? Leave a comment and let us all know. This is a great phrase, regardless of years, to use with native speakers.

32. I’m learning Japanese all by myself.

  • 独学で日本語を勉強しています。
  • Dokugaku de Nihongo o benkyō shite imasu.

Most learners start alone and some start with classes. There’s no wrong way to start or learn Japanese. However, self-learners tend to see more success than classroom learners. Why? They’re motivated  to start alone without needing anyone.

33. Apart from knowing Japanese, I can speak a few other languages as well.

  • 日本語以外にも、いくつかの言語を話すことができます。
  • Nihongo igai ni mo, ikutsu ka no gengo o hanasu koto ga dekimasu.

Are you a polyglot? This is a good phrase to know. Nowadays, people are speaking up to 3 languages with fair ease. If you know any more, this phrase is perfect for you.

34. I can watch Japanese movies without subtitles.

  • 字幕なしで日本の映画を見ることができます。
  • Jimaku nashi de Nihon no eiga o miru koto ga dekimasu.

Ah, the goal of every (well, almost every) Japanese learner. Watch movies, drama and anime without subtitles. If you can do this, your Japanese skills are definitely through the roof.

35. I can memorize around 50 new Japanese words a day.

  • 新しい日本語の単語を一日50語ぐらい覚えることができます。
  • Atarashī Nihongo no tango o ichi-nichi go-jū-go gurai oboeru koto ga dekimasu.

36. Japanese is fun and easy to learn!

  • 日本語は楽しくて簡単に学べます!
  • Nihongo wa tanoshikute kantan ni manabemasu!

Some will disagree with this. And these people won’t actually learn Japanese. Either you truly like it, you enjoy the torment or you’re apathetic/emotionless and can push through. Either way, good phrase to use.

37. I’ll speak Japanese like a native speaker in 3 years.

  • 三年間でネイティブスピーカーのように日本語を話せるようになります。
  • San-nenkan de neitibu supīkā no yō ni Nihongo o hanaseru yō ni narimasu.

Have you set a deadline? You should. Because a Japanese learner without some goals will end up being one of those that say “oh i used to study japanese…” This is a bit of a boastful statement, but screw it – either you’re learning or you’re not.

38. I completely understood everything you said.

  • 話していたことは全部わかりました。 
  • Hanashite ita koto wa zenbu wakarimashita.

Now this is a phrase that’ll knock Japanese people’s socks off! You understood everything. Every native speaker worries you don’t understand them – this will give them relief and you’ll appear as a confident speaker. Even if you’re not! 🙂

39. Thank you but I’m not a native speaker actually.

  • ありがとうございます。でも実は、私、ネイティブスピーカーではないんです。
  • Arigatō gozaimasu. Demo jitsu wa, watashi, neitibu supīkā de wa nai n desu.

Just in case anyone asks you if you’re a native Japanese speaker. Your accent’s a little too good. Your replies are a little too natural. Are you sure you weren’t raised in Japan!? Yes, such learners exist!

40. It took me only one year to speak well.

  • うまく話せるようになるのに一年しかかかりませんでした。 
  • Umaku hanaseru yō ni naru no ni ichi-nen shika kakarimasen deshita.

Well, maybe not! But it’s definitely possible. Add in your own years. However, here’s one phrase that’ll shock people and impress them. In Japanese, it says “umaku hanaseru” meaning “being able to speak well” so… this is a pretty general statement.
