2. From English to Swedish 1: A basic Swedish textbook for English speaking students

There are actually two volumes of this textbook. The first one gets you through the A1 level. The second gets you through A2.

  • Pages: 241
  • By Createspace

Anyway, the textbook has you follow a story of an American exchange student in Sweden. So, across 15 chapters, you get a new dialogue with the student and her life in Sweden, and along the way you earn 1,500 words, plenty of grammar rules. And, yes, you do get exercises inside the book.

By the way, here’s the 2nd volume: From English to Swedish 2: An intermediate Swedish textbook for English speaking students.

3. Get Started in Swedish Absolute Beginner Course

Here’s another one worthy to be on the best Swedish textbooks list. Why?

It takes you to the A2 level on the CEFR scale AND includes audio.

  • Pages: 176
  • By Teach Yourself
  • Includes audio that you can download.

Like most textbooks, this 10-chapter resource gives you culture points, vocabulary, conversations, grammar practice, exercises, listening and an answer key.

I’d say any of these first 3 books are safe routes to start with.

4. Essential Swedish Grammar (Dover Language Guides Essential Grammar)

Now, if you’re going to take on a language, you’ll need a resource for grammar.

Grammar is what gets you speaking and expressing yourself correctly AND precisely. Like a native.

So, this is where this book comes in.

  • Pages: 96
  • By Dover

Not much to say. It’s a clear, to-the-point grammar book with rules, explanations, and examples. Exactly what you need to add some grammar to your brain.

5. Shortcut to Swedish: Beginner’s Guide to Quickly Learning the Basics of the Swedish Language

Yes, this is not a textbook. It’s more of a crash course.

Now, should you get this or a textbook? Well, it depends. Textbooks are for people that are slightly more serious and committed. And these kind of books are more so for casual, “unsure” learners.

  • Pages: 58
  • By Createspace

That being said, this book teaches you 300 most common words, basic grammar, pronunciation and basic phrases. Plus, there are plenty of explanations inside along the way.

6. Learn Swedish with Beginner Stories: Interlinear Swedish to English

You know what’s a good way to learn Swedish? Through stories!

  • Pages: 151
  • By Bermuda Word

The point here is to read stories in Swedish and get help from the translations that are provided between the lines. This means you don’t waste time looking up word after word. The result? You end up grasping the meaning and picking up the words quickly. However, the value is in the re-reading rather than just going through the stories once.

7. Swedish Tutor: Grammar and Vocabulary Workbook

This book is a great companion for whatever Swedish textbook you have. Why? Exercises.

  • Pages: 224
  • By Teach Yourself

Across 20 chapters, you’ll learn words and grammar, along with 200 exercises to help you nail them all down.

Definitely a must-have resource on this list of best Swedish textbooks.

8. Berlitz Phrase Book & Dictionary Swedish

Phrasebooks are another easy way to learn Swedish.

  • Pages: 224 pages
  • By Berlitz Publishing

Why? Because instead of learning words one by one, you learn phrases. Phrases that you can use immediately. So, if you’re looking to travel or simply add more Swedish phrases to your brain, this is a good way to do so.

9. Swedish-English English/Swedish Practical Dictionary

Phrasebooks aside, if you are interested in learning Swedish for the long term, you’ll need a dictionary.

This 432-page whopper of a dictionary contains over 28,000 entries.

If you’re learning with a textbook, this will be a wonderful companion to help you improve your vocabulary and learn more Swedish.

10. Swedish: Learn Swedish in a Week!

Can you learn Swedish in a week? Well… not the whole language.

This is also a crash course with 27 quick chapters on the Alphabet, Greetings, Introductions, Numbers, and more.

  • Pages: 68
  • By Createspace

But, all you get here are words and phrases. There are no explanations. So, if you want the essential basics, this book may be for you. The downside is that there’s no audio for you to check the pronunciation. Otherwise, it’s not a bad resource for quick learning.
